Funds allocated by the government for the children at the orphanages aren’t enough even for the basic needs. We have been buying medication for the disabled kids at the orphanages for years now, even the most basic medication, such as paracetamol, as well as any kind of «special» formula. If, for some reason, a baby cannot digest the «Malyutka» (most common and cheapest Ukrainian baby formula) and requires hypoallergenic or any other kind of special formula, it needs to be bought by the benefactors.

The situation with the diapers is as follows. The rule used by the government to calculate the number of diapers required: 2 diapers per child per day (one for going outside, one for the night). If a child gets sick, or is disabled, suffering from incontinence and he or she requires more diapers per day — no one cares. Also, no one has accounted for devaluation of Hryvna this year. Monthly governmental «allowance» for diapers was calculated in October-November 2014. The prices are 2-3 times higher now. Our attempts to help by bringing 2-3-5 packs of diapers each visit affect only a couple of children, unfortunately.

To allow for three diapers per day for babies and disabled kids we need:
5,000 diapers — for the orphanage in Boyarka;
6,000 diapers — for the orphanage in Pryluky.

Given today’s prices — it will cost us a fortune. We understand that it is highly unlikely that we will be able to cover this standing need, but we will try to help as much as we can.

Of course, we’re not talking about the expensive Pampers kind. We have several contacts of Ukrainian (Pipi) and Polish (Helen Harper, Da-Da, etc) distributors of cheaper diapers, who can get us a discount… You could also buy diapers yourself and get them to us (personally, through Nova Pochta…) or take them to the orphanage yourself.

Today we have delivered 65 (!!!) packs of diapers to the orphanage in Boyarka. All thanks to Alena Krestinova and her company. Not only did they agree to sell us the diapers at the purchase price, they also contacted their distributor, told them about us and talked them into giving us a discount and free delivery!! Thank you!
