Svetlana N., 1 y.o., multiple defects + hydrocephalus
First appeal:
Vika is in the neonatal intensive care unit at the Ohmadet hospital. She was born at 32 weeks, weighing 1.6 kg. Her parents did not officially abandon the girl, but they do not visit her. Last week, her stomach has been operated on, and yesterday (19/06/15), around 7 pm, the doctors performed emergency surgery to place a draining reservoir into her head. Everything had to be decided within 10-15 minutes. When the neurosurgeon called us, we immediately called our provider, who quickly brought over all the necessary medical equipment and medication to the hospital, and we promised to pay for everything by Monday. The surgery went on until 9pm. We need to pray for Vika. When she gains weight, she will need another surgery to replace the draining reservoir with a shunt.
Total financial balance as of 08/01/2017:
Spent by bank transfer — 68,762.45 UAH ($2,530)
Cash spent (receipts) — 11,869.75 UAH ($440)
Nannies salary — 24,950 UAH ($920)

For the holidays Sveta was with our most qualified nanny, Anna Petrivna. Sveta is getting a little better. The doctors have adjusted her meds, trying to decrease the impact they have on Sveta’s liver. She got some IV drips and gets a lot to drink. She also started closing her eyes when she sleeps, which means that she started producing tears. This was she does not need for her eyes to be covered with cloth when she’s asleep..
This week Natalia brought 30 pack of specialised formula to the orphanage for her.
Huge thanks to Anna and her family and friends for the diapers and some meds. I will bring the rest over enxt week!
Huge thanks to everyone who supports this child!
Receipts: 774.31 UAH ($30).
Nannies: 8,600 UAH ($320)
UPD 27 DEC 2016
We are often shocked at the prices at the pharmacies… Two pharmacies, 100 meters aparet, same medication. At one pharmacy it costs 185 UAH ($$7), at the other 260 UAH ($10). $3 difference of one small bottle of medication.
Since the cheaper pharmacy ran out of this medication, and Sveta needed it for as soon as the next feeding, we had no choise but to buy it for the higher price.
Sveta isn’t doing very well. She’s got toxic hepatitis Still, she is doing better than last week. Now, and for all the holidays, our nanny Anna Petrivna will stay with her.
I got some parcels with meds, devided them between out orphans at the hospitals and already brought diapers and some new clothes for Sveta!
Thanks to everyone who is helping our kids!
Receipts: 914 UAH ($35)
UPD 12 DEC 2016
Went to visit Sveta twice last week — just to bring the meds; will go there again today, to bring the rest. The flu season has started, so they don’t let anyone in her room — just in case. She had a consult with hepatologist, ordered some tests, the blood has already been delivered to the lab.
Receipts — 2,288.73 UAH ($84)
UPD 29 NOV 2016
Last week our nanny Lena stayed with Sveta.
It was a sleepless week, as Sveta feels worse at night, more seizures, but if she it held at the time, if someone is there to keep her back from bending to much backwards — the seizure are lighter. So Lena did not sleep much. During the day Sveta gets procedures ever 30-40 minutes — meds, feedings, eyedrops…
During this week a new child from this orphanage was hospitalized — Anya. So for the last 10 days Lena was both of the girls’ nanny. We are very grateful to her!
Also, a priest came to visit Sveta, for her to receive communion..
Nannies — 6,600 UAH ($245)
Receipts — 1,342.21 UAH ($50)
UPD 04 NOV 2016
Nanny — $100 + 200 UAH = 2800 UAH ($208)
Receipts — 979,05 UAH ($38)
UPD 26 OCT 2016

Receipts for the meds and food — 850,60 UAH ($33)
Nanny — 250 UAH ($10)
UPD 19 OCT 2016
Yesterday our nanny Alla came to stay with Sveta at the hospital for a week. Sveta’s health is the same. She has some stomach issues, the doctors checked it out, hopefully it’ll get better soon. She started growing hair, thanks to the fact that she’s being turned around al the time. We’ll be giving her hairdos soon :)))
Receipts for the meds and food — 946.18 UAH ($37)
Nanny — 2,100 UAH ($82)
UPD 23 SEP 2016
Our nanny’s stay with Sveta eneded and she went back home for two weeks. Now a nanny from an orphanage is staying with Sveta. Both the hospital and the orphanage are happy with Alla’s work, so hopefully she will come back to stay with Sveta in two weeks.
Receipts for the meds and food — 921.20 UAH ($36)
Nanny — 4,600 UAH ($179)

UPD 17 DEC 15
Sveta was transferred to the Department for Infectious Diseases. She has CSF inflammation and she was in contact with chicken pox. She’s at a private room now. She needs expensive antibiotics: Meronem, Vancomicyn, diapers, wetwipes… We bought some with the money from the ‘emergency fund’.
UPD 30 NOV 15
Because of the quarantine at the Institute of Neurosurgery Sveta couldn’t be admitted there, so the doctors are going all the way to the left bank to treat her. Her shunt was taking out, she’s currently on the drainage system.
UPD 16 NOV 15
Sveta, our little angel… This is the little girl who the doctors names Viktoria, the social services named Sveta and she was christened as Anna…
We are not posting pictures showing her face as the child has multiple malformation.
Sveta (Anna) is a martyr. We don’t know how much more time the God will give her, but we’re hoping for as little pain as possible…
Please pray for her…
UPD 15 SEP 15
Sveta is at the hospital again.
UPD 06 SEP 15
Vika has been officially renamed to Sveta. I don’t know why, but this is the second time our children receive a new name at this orphanage. For almost a month Vika-Sveta has been going between the children’s home and the hospital because she regularly gets a fever. Her head has increased in size.
Today, Natalia Nazarenko and I visited her at the children’s home Berezka. She is in the same isolated section as Nikita, where we are not allowed to enter, so we could only see her through the window. We also brought her diapers.
UPD 28 JULY 15
Vika is stable and has been discharged. We are now going to be her patrons at the children’s home.
UPD 22 JULY 15
She is undergoing treatment and can already breathe by herself.
UPD 09 JULY 15
Today Vika was operated on and her draining reservoir has been replaced with a shunt, which cost 16,930 UAH ($700). A huge thank you to the Kiev workers at IFC and World Bank for donating 7,385 UAH ($310) and to everyone who helped raise the remainder of the money. Vika’s parents have signed all official documents, forsaking their parental responsibilities toward the child.
We are bringing the shunt and other materials for the surgery. Vika is already anesthetized, waiting for our delivery.

UPD 24 JUNE 15
She is still in the intensive care unit and is breathing with the help of a machine.
